Novartis Sponsor the Hospital Pharmacy News, “Innovation and Service Development Award”
Novartis sponsored the “Innovation and Service Development Award” for the 3rd consecutive year. At a ceremony, attended by over 400 hospital pharmacists , Novartis presented the award to the Pharmacy Department of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.
Moninne Howlett, Chief II Pharmacist at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin said “I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of our team. We are a Paediatric hospital, and we therefore take care of a particular group of young patients. Often when they are being discharged into the community we have a heavy involvement in making sure they have a seamless transition of care. We take very special care of the children in our care and so this Award and recognition means a great deal to us all.”
This Award provides Novartis with the opportunity to recognise the excellent contribution that hospital pharmacists make, creating new and innovative ways of developing services that benefit patients. This is also a great opportunity for all finalists to showcase and share best practices across all Irish hospitals.
The award went to the Pharmacy Department at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.
The Pharmacy Department at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital is the largest Paediatric Hospital Pharmacy Department in Ireland. Paediatric medicines are often unlicensed, have complicated dosing and are high risk. Many healthcare professionals are often not as familiar with this cohort of patients leading to a service gap for information and communication. With these factors in mind, it was imperative that the team provide a hands-on ward-based pharmacy service. Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital is currently one of the only Hospital Pharmacy Departments that liaise directly with the community, provide discharge medicines and extensive education to parents. We also provide the community with readily available information about dosing, administration, formulation information and procurement for our patients.
As the largest Paediatric Hospital Pharmacy Department, the team ensures that it provides safe and effective communication to all care providers. The information is evidence based and accessible to all care providers through the formulary app. It helps to provide a seamless patient care pathway as patient’s transition throughout secondary and primary care
The most important element is that this project is patient focused. It emphasises safety, appropriate use of medicines, supply of medicines, access to information, drug dosing, and that the pharmacist is always accessible and at the forefront of care.
